What is Da Bei Zhou?
Da Bei Zhou is a dharani (similar to a mantra, but longer) of Mahayana Buddhist origin. It is also known as the Great Compassion Mantra in English and Nilakantha Dharani or as Maha Karuṇa Dharani in Sanskrit. According to the Mahakarunikacitta Sutra, it was first mentioned by the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (Kuan Yin). The Great Compassion Mantra is said to have the power to liberate all sentient creatures from suffering, delivering them from ignorance.
Kuan Yin learned Da Bei Zhou from her teacher Qian Guang Jing Wan. Upon hearing the mantra, Kuan Yin instantly made a vow that she will share and spread this mantra in all her lifetimes. Qian Guang Jing Wan then transmitted Qian Shou Qian Yan (Thousand Hands and Thousand Eyes) to Kuan Yin.
